about

Joy ‘09 is an alt-pop workout by Star Matriarch that explores a different catharsis than her previous singles. While last year revolved around trolling the oppressor, Joy ‘09 explores raging euphoria in the simplicity of the present moment. She takes her joy just as seriously as her rage.

Anchored by urgent kinetic drums, she takes you from love at first sight to the Egyptian desert to the first Black president by fervent melodic storm. A sonic detour at the bridge is a moment to catch your breath, with stunning strings-flute interplay followed by an ethereal vocal tribute to her dog. The Matriarch is enjoying her right to unabashed joy in the present moment, no matter what silly white patriarchal capitalist expectations have been placed on her. The emphatic, almost ritualistic outro tells you this is an act of Defiance.

“Take it off the ground | take it low to high | to find you | to find you.”

Kinda like if The Polyphonic Spree or The Shins had a Space Queen Sex Goddess frontwoman who unapologetically feels her feelings… somehow turning falling in love with your life into the most punk thing you could ever do.
