about
“If I’m going to be marginalized, I’m going to take their fucking money,” Carol of Star Matriarch says of her inspiration for this song.
In “Geisha Means Open-Minded”, the second single on Star Matriarch’s forthcoming LP Red Ship, she subverts the secretive online rating system Johns used to titillate each other while evaluating escorts’ “appearance” and “performance'' during her time as a sex worker in the mid-oughts. Even in rave reviews, hobbyists often somehow managed to be fatphobic and racist in the same breath.
Musically, "'Geisha' Means 'Open-Minded'" is practically a masterclass on how far "blues-based rock" can go when you venture beyond the typical white American dude harmonic and rhythmic palette. With her abrasive guitars and Vistalite drums joyriding to a South Asian-inflected beat, you'll be putting this one on repeat and rage-singing along until your throats hurts.
This sonic adventure has Star Matriarch playfully weaponizing her rave reviews to mock racist & misogynist johns as she belts, “A 10 for performance...forgot it was a service!” Rage or celebration? It's fun to mock oppressors, so maybe the latter.
For every person who has had to charm the pants off the oppressor whilst completely outsmarting him: it’s a banger.
'Geisha' Means 'Open-Minded' comes out July 19th via Exotic Fever Records on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.
lyrics
I saw the name with the picture and the number
Met her later that very same day
(kinda big for an asian)
LFK to DFK and I complied to put her at ease
(nope, not a cop!)
Asked for directions as she crept up slowly
But I think she knew her way around just fine
Spilled the first cup, offered another
I couldn’t refuse
Oh, a 9 for appearance
Kinda thick, imperfect but who wants somebody perfect?
Oh, a 9 for performance
I couldn’t have been more comfortable
Forgot it was a service!
Oh, I know we’ll meet again
I had such a good time
I can’t wait til the next time
Oh. Uh huh
Phew, caught my breath
She said, “I’m so pleased to meet you!”
(perfect English!)
Shook my hand, took my coat and let me in
Warm DFK to DATY
Tasted like honey
After awhile, got rid of the cover
And she left me with nothing to wish for
Sweet GFE almost PSE
Did not want to leave
Oh, a 10 for appearance
Kinda thick imperfect but who wants somebody perfect
Oh, a 10 for performance
I couldn’t have been more comfortable
Forgot it was a service!
Oh, I know we’ll meet again
I had such a good time
I can’t wait til the next time!
Oh, uh huh
Uh huh
Said she does it out of kindness
Sympathetic, loving,
Open-minded
Paying for noble habits
She told me so
She’s truly sincere, I know that she cares
I wanna believe it,
I’ll pay to believe it
(Take it, take it all, take all of my fucking money
Fucking Hot
Eyes so Exotic
Definitely an ATF
She doesn’t watch the clock
Fuck yea)
Oh, uh huh
Oh, uh huh, uh huh
Oh, uh huh
To be honest, I usually go for skinnier girls
But she was reasonably fit and definitely cute
So I went for it
We started chatting as she took off my shoes, and her English was great
I mean, if you want a girl who will never tell you ‘no’
Go see a Chinese girl.
They just want to please
And those eyes? Fucking killer man.
Yea, I’m definitely coming back.
More deets for VIPs!
(GFE my sweetheart, wanna shake your hand again)
Oh, uh huh
(So good to feel you wanna stay beside you)
Oh, uh huh
(I can’t get my girl to love me and I love to think you love me)
Oh, oh, uh huh
Uh huh
Uh huh
